D&D 4E - 03/08/09 Empty D&D 4E - 03/08/09

Post by J1NX Mon 23 Feb 2009, 8:35 am

I have been curious about D&D 4E since it came out and finally I'm at a point where I want to tromp around in the newly streamlined world to see if it is Win or Fail.

I will be canceling our normal gaming session on March 8th (which is a Sunday) and instead leading a small group through a 4E campaign for 4 level 1-3 characters.

Sign up below and be sure that you will be available for a 4 hour session. I am willing to move the session to earlier in the day if everyone can make it, but as far as I am concerned starting at 7:30 will be fine.

Any questions and comments are welcome.

What you will need:
-------------------
1x set of polyhedral D&D dice
1x D&D 4E character sheet
1x pencil

What may be helpful:
-------------------
1x 4E Players Handbook

I hope to see you there.

-J
Game on.

Just saying this in case you didn't know, but 4e was actually made focused around a group of 6 players, which helps everything go a bit smoother than when you have less. Not saying 4 wouldn't work, just figured I'd mention it. Also, you could try playing Keep on the Shadowfell, I've been playing it for the past while, and its working pretty well.

I am aware of the original intent for the game to use 6 players, but I am also aware that the game is now made to scale to whatever sized party you have at your disposal. With 4 players and my NPC making a 5th we will ba able to cut through a dungeon adventure together with very little trouble....hopefully.

I have looked at Shadowfell and am intending on using it if things look good for enrollment, until then I am going to be placing my order for D&D schema later today.

I plan to pick up the DMG seeing as how Trick has a PH and MM. I will also be getting the DM screen and the starter kit. With a little time to prepare I will look over the level 1 campaign that is included with the kit and see if Shadowfell would be better for us.

Then I recommend you get your hands on Trick's PH and d/l the character builder from wizards.com

I have put my hands on an Eladrin Wizard.

I will be sending invites to all those that I would like involved in the trial one night only campaign. I want to keep it small to minimize on the stupid antics and maximize game play.

I hope that everyone invited can attend.

I believe it was a resounding yes.

Once I can secure the next couple encounters and we finish off the current game I foresee a 4th Edition game incoming.

Wow, that is high praise.

My group is much less receptive to a 4E game (although, they still reference AD&D... so.)

To be honest there was a lot of doubt going in, but we were willing to give it a shot before we judged fully. We had a closed door setup that was invite only, so as to control the size/distraction factor. There were also a few rules going in.

1. "We are noobs."
-Once the people in the group were able to get off their "I've played this game for years" attitude and realized that there were enough changes that if we started using a rule a way that we thought it should work and then found out later how it REALLY worked, it would be hard to change back to the actual rule.

2. "This is one night only"
-I let all of the gamers invited know that this was a one night engagement that ran us through enough dungeon to give us a gist of the rules and a good feeling for game play. It wasn't until after the deed had been done would we cast our vote on whether to keep or dump the new game.

3. "All roles must be filled."
-I initially wanted to just use the pre-made characters, but thought that our party might like a little more variety. I made the rule that as long as all spots were filled than we could all play our own unique characters. They complied.

4. "No back story."
-The first thing that most gamers start thinking about is "Ok so where did this guy/gal come from and what is their part in life. This can be as simple as "What is their home town?" to "Which type of undergarments did the queen of the kingdom they ruled over wear?" I like elaborate storytelling as much as the next guy, but in 4E it is intended that the party create their story together while around the table. It makes for better gelling.

With those things in mind we went into the fray armed with nothing more than dice and prayers to find a really good game structure built into a very fun mechanical system. I can't wait for us to seriously get into it again. I was very pleased.
