OMG TRF FTW

I am doing some looking at the Texas Renaissance Festival for this year and I am trying to decide between going on Pirates weekend or going on barbarians weekend.

If anyone else is interested in going gimme some feedback.

Pirates Oct 20-21

Dude, I don't know about going to the TEXAS Renaissance Festival... I'll have to see about that when I get back from Alaska.
But, is anyone planning on going to the one out there in Whitehouse this year at all?? I was going through some of my armor and stuff the other day, and I got all excited about it again. LOL I need to find my swords...

I'll probably go to Four Winds this year to watch some of my friends fire spinning out there. As far as TRF goes, I'm definately going, I just have to find out when the rest of the BDM (Black Dragon Merc's) are going.

Then, you needed to talk to me about three years ago. LOL Cus now I don't have any time. It took me 5 months to make mine, and that was almost constant work. It would take me a year or more now.
Chainmail is just one of those things in life that will always be really fucking expensive... Either in time or in money, or in both.
The bottom line is, that it's the extensive time that is required to make one, that makes them so damn pricey....
I could however show you how to make it. It would then depend on your own perseverance to complete your projects.

I am more than willing to learn if you can show me, but I don't know if I could finish in time for fair this year. In which case I may end up buying one for myself and making a more interesting one for next year.

I did a little bit last night...
And now i've got blisters on my hands and fingers....it's been way too long since i've made armor. But I think I still have the nack for it.
But, there's no way in hell that I would be able to make an entire shirt for less then $200.oo. That's not even breaking even really...

Thats precisely what i am looking for. All i need now is to figure out where I can get the rest of my costume made. I am wanting to get an entire outfit made. This is going to be the only armor portion of it though. The rest is cloth. I need a bell cuffed shirt, pants and a hood...you know what this would be easier with pictures.

I want to make the outfit's main color be white with gold accent if possible. I want to look like a well to do priest/cleric that is newly back from the war front. Alamar, the guy I am trying to portray is more interested in looking good while he tells his tales of rid the world of undead than anything and he needs to look the part.

If anyone knows anybody who does costume work let them know I am looking. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get this costume together.

If you can find a person who can sew well, and will make this stuff for you, then all you have to do is go to Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby and buy whatever materials you want it made from. Talk about totally custom...

But remember, that riveted stuff is going to cost you an arm and a leg more than the normal stuff... But the riveted chainmail is guaranteed never to break from wear and tear...
It just comes down to how much you are willing to spend on something that has no "real world" applications other than theatrical ones...and bragging rights.

Pirates! Or barbarians... or both. I happen to have more pirate costume pieces than barbarian, and I'm horrible partial to the rapscallions.
As to Four Winds and chain mail, I think Buddha still works in the shop out there (near the front gate on the left, before the Trojan Rabbit.) He's very good.
And the blacksmith's wife, Sarah, and her sisters are excellent seamstresses. They're also reasonably priced. Her sisters run a costume shop on site (the little stand alone booth maybe twenty paces from the main gates) and Sarah can be found at Shadowhawk forge up the hill by the chessboard. Let me know what weekend you'd like to go, or what have you, and I'll introduce ya.

You should all come down on the big BDM weekend guys. We generally pick out the time in June or July at the latest. We are hoping to gather up enough people that we can get group rate tickets and such. Trust me it is tons of fun to go in a big group and just because the weekend has a theme doesn't mean you have to follow it. Other than Highland weekend the others aren't followed too closely.
However J!NX on the subject of your chain mail. My roommate Jim has started into the business and is looking for orders but, if you want one made by fair you are going to want to get started and start talking to someone right away.

Perhaps I should start announcing some fair stuff and the times for and BDM meet ups that are coming up in the near future. If you are on the Boards you can come as my guest to anything we do.

Duh.... BTW I have three costumers in the BDM that are all experienced and more than happy to work with first timers to help you get into the spirit of fair.... and hooked on the kickass custom garb they make.

I am in fact heading out there this Saturday. I'll be on the forge most of the day, but I should be able to break away for a show or two... I'll probably ride out there with the blacksmith and his wife before the gates open so I can snag a costume. Yay paycheck!
