Ok, so im way too lazy to read all this but, the short version is scientist have decided to build a giant "lazer" (that is actually thousands of smaller lazers if i read this correctly) thats roughly the size of 3 football fields to create a star on earth... Pretty much from what i gathered is that they're going to take all these lazers and focus them on one point and hope to create a star, and then harness the power of the star to use as energy... link below

the project "Eta" is 2012.

I can see this actually working, and in that same since i can see this as a huge flop. I am curious what everyone else thinks thou, so...

Yeah, this isn't news exactly. It's been in planning for a while.

I personally think that this is a good idea. We need to have a scientific breakthrough come around in the next 5-10 years or imo we'll cease to be a great nation. Almost all of our research to date has been used to created wonderdrugs that enhance our physical appearance over the past few years. How about a drug that staves off AIDS or maybe a definitive cancer vaccine?

In the world of science this is the greatest achievement, though. Bring to Earth a power source so pure and so big that it could be used to solve the world's energy crisis with one swoop. This is just the tip of the iceberg though. If we are able to create a sustainable, clean burning, renewable energy source that is a step towards deep space exploration. Who knows, perhaps in our grandchildren's time we might reach beyond our own galaxy?!

This experiment and others like it are crucial.

If there is one thing I learned in astronomy It that we know very little about our own galaxy. It would be fucking sweet if we could somehow cut down the time it takes to travel to distant planets and learn about what all is out there.
